Mixing Colors

This writing is more about color schemes than mixing colors. Mixing colors is either an art or trial and error. With me, it's trial and error but always turns out beautiful like magic no matter how much I do or don't know about the subject.

Whenever I am not sure how to paint something, an Internet image from Google search usually does the trick. such as painting a mallard duck. Who knows the exact colors in their head about how to paint the features of a mallard duck? Sorry but I need a candid color photograph for that. Simply study the hues and blends needed within the piece and let your paint brush do the rest. One color blends into the next.

Something that looks difficult to paint usually isn't. It's just a matter of blending those colors into each other as you work with your brush. Even novices like me are shocked to find that their pieces turned out so beautiful, you'd think a professional artist performed the work.

Figurines, however, are a little different because figurines usually have eyes. Eyes have always been difficult for me but they've always turned out well regardless. Mostly because ceramics are a forgiving art. If you don't like the first go, just paint back over it and start again. On the other hand, if your work is so shotty, you want to break it, STOP! Don't do it! That paint can be fired off with another turn in the kiln for you to start fresh and new.

Even delving way off the chart such as, "I think Santa's coat would look nice in pearl green," always turns out awesome. So, don't be afraid to test the water in whatever current mood your painting takes you. And always scribe something special on the bottom such as "Made in America," or "Made with love by Aunt Penny". That's what makes every piece unique and special - you!
